Who is a chemical engineer

Chemical engineer - training, studies, job description, salary and application

Those who choose to study chemistry usually have a keen interest in the natural sciences and have usually completed an advanced course in this area.

The fields of work are very extensive and range from chemical engineering to process engineering to biochemistry. The focus here is already placed on the choice of course.

Job profile chemical engineer

After the apprenticeship, the job description offers a wide range of tasks and employment options. It is used, for example, in research at public institutions or in industry. The chemical companies with their productions also offer a demanding activity; the interfaces here are process engineering or application development.

In the field of environmental protection, the tasks are becoming more and more diverse, especially the field of analysis offers tricky tasks that have to be solved. Polluters have to be recognized and precautions have to be taken in the companies.

In addition to these areas of application, marketing and public relations also play an increasing role. Technical chemistry know-how is often in short supply in these areas and complex relationships must be explained simply and precisely.

The chemical engineer of tomorrow also needs explanations, which is why more and more skilled workers are being drawn to the teaching profession. In chemistry lessons at a secondary school or vocational school, basic knowledge is imparted and interest is aroused.

Studies and training as a chemical engineer

Studies in chemical engineering are currently possible at around 50 different universities in Germany. There is no numerus clausus, as the number of applications at the universities is manageable.

In the basic course, the different areas - inorganic, organic, analytical and physical chemistry are studied in equal parts. In the main course, after the intermediate diploma, a thematic deepening of the areas is aimed for, followed by the diploma thesis in one of the areas.

The degree in chemical engineering with a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science degree usually takes place after 7.4 semesters. A master’s degree can then be started.

Chemical engineers are actually always sought after as specialists, depending on the area.
The professional perspective after studying chemistry can therefore be rated as good.

Properties and requirements

The joy of experimentation and an understanding of the natural sciences are basic requirements for successful studies and success in the job. A careful way of working and a great sense of responsibility are a duty, also in your own interest. Dealing with hazardous chemicals and process technologies requires extensive safety measures by chemical engineers.

Often not only the success of the work depends on the accuracy of the work, sloppiness can also have unexpected consequences financially.

In chemical engineering, team players are required, the days of lonely laboratory work are over. Projects are often carried out in small teams, sometimes even over years in research.

Chemical engineer salary

The salary as a graduate chemist is very good and is between 3,000 and 3,900 euros. Outside of the collective agreement, the salary can be lower.

The future looks relatively bright and skilled workers are still being sought. The German chemical industry is doing well and the current vacancies paint a positive picture when looking for a job. There are enough chemical engineer positions, and the positions are often given well before the degree is completed.
