How much sleep do dogs need?

Man's best friend spends most of the day sleeping. How many hours the four-legged friends rest varies, however, because various factors play a role here. On the one hand, the age and living conditions of the animal are decisive: Older and sick dogs need a little more sleep. A puppy also generally sleeps more, although he usually treats himself to several shorter sleep units. The respective breed of dog is also decisive with regard to the need for sleep, because large breeds usually sleep a little more than their small relatives.

The sleep phases are divided up both over the night and over the day, because most four-legged friends also sleep several hours during the day. However, they are not always in a real deep sleep, but mostly doze off to themselves. Accordingly, they wake up quickly from a nap if they hear something or if something moves in their environment. Nevertheless, your four-legged friends should always have enough rest and sleep phases, because these are just as important for them as they are for us humans!

Why is sleep important to our pets?

Like us, our fur noses process the events of the day in their sleep and recharge their batteries for the next day. On the other hand, if the animals don't sleep enough, this can have a negative impact on their well-being and health. Among other things, nervousness and restlessness can be traced back to insomnia. If the insomnia persists for a long time, the risk of illness increases at the same time. For example, skin problems and allergies, but also an autoimmune reaction from too little sleep, are favored. As you can see, it is extremely important that the fur noses get enough and good sleep. But what if you wake up at night or even suffer from insomnia?

Why does a dog wake up at night?

In most cases, the fur noses adapt to the daily routine and sleep rhythm of their owner. Accordingly, most fur noses also sleep through the night. But that's not always the case, because sometimes they wake up at night, pant a lot and are restless or nervous. The reasons for this are of different nature and mostly harmless. For example, a puppy may wake up at night from doing business. After all, a puppy must first be accustomed to house training and the daily routine. So this is perfectly normal and generally not a cause for concern. But even adult animals can wake up at night and be restless. Everything is possible up to permanent yowling.

Finding the cause of insomnia

If your animal friend wakes up at night, the first thing to do is to find out why. For example, it is possible that he simply had a bad dream or was frightened. Perhaps he is also afraid of something or does not feel particularly comfortable in his sleeping place. If he panted intensely at night, then he may simply be too warm. Because dogs only have sweat glands on their paws and can only regulate their body temperature by panting. But not only the heat can disturb the sleep of the animals, because too much exercise or generally demanding activities late in the evening can have a negative effect on sleep. The same applies to late feeding and too much dog food in the evening.

In some cases, however, the insomnia can also be traced back to illness. In particular, coughs, osteoarthritis, problems with the spine and thyroid dysfunction can cause the dog to wake up at night. If your four-legged friend often suffers from sleep disorders and coughs more often at night, a visit to the vet is recommended in every respect. If health problems can be ruled out and your dog still wakes up at night, you can usually take appropriate measures to promote his sleep.

How do you promote good sleep?

First of all, it's important that you keep your pet busy on a daily basis - both mentally and physically. Extensive walks, but also dog sports and intelligence games are ideal for this. The same applies to dog training, whereby smaller training units can be easily integrated into everyday life. For example, you can refresh the basic commands again and again and reward your four-legged friend with treats. However, so that he can relax in the evening, you should not do these activities with him late in the evening. You should also not offer him food or healthy chews to keep him busy right before going to bed, as this can really hit his stomach. Of course, it should not be forgotten that the choice of sleeping place is also directly related to a good night's sleep!

Cozy dog ​​bed for a good night's sleep

In order for your dog to sleep through the night, he should also have a quiet and comfortable place to sleep. Set up a cozy dog ​​bed near you that he can retreat into. Make sure that the place where you sleep is protected from drafts and direct sunlight. If it is too hot for him in summer, a special cooling mat can help. However, some animals generally prefer to sleep on a cool stone or tile floor in summer.

If your dog has just moved in with you, it may first need to be familiarized with its sleeping place. You can do this best if you make his bed particularly interesting for him. Offer your four-legged friend, for example, chewing antlers that they can nibble with relish in their little bed. In this way you not only pamper him with culinary delights, but also create a positive connection with the (unknown) dog bed. Chewing horns or, better, chewing roots soothe, care for the teeth and do not hit the stomach.
