Configure AirPods with iPad
Configure the AirPods to play audio from music, movies, text messages, and more. You can also use the AirPods to make and receive FaceTime calls with your iPad.
Note: For more information on charging your AirPods before you configure them, see Charge your AirPods for use with iPad.
Pair AirPods with your iPad
Select "Settings" on the iPad > "Bluetooth" and activate the option "Bluetooth".
Go to the home screen on your iPad.
Do one of the following:
AirPods Max: Press the "Noise Control" button on the right headphones and hold the AirPods Max next to your iPad (iPadOS 14.3 or later).
AirPods Pro or AirPods (1st and 2nd generation): Open the case that the AirPods are in and hold it next to your iPad.
Follow the instructions on the screen and then tap on "Done".
Your AirPods will automatically pair with all of your supported devices if you're signed in with the same Apple ID (iOS 10, iPadOS 13, macOS 10.12, watchOS 3 or later required).
Note: If your AirPods won't pair, see the Apple Support article AirPods won't pair.
Find the best fit (AirPods Pro)
Perform the tip fit test to find the best fit.
Open the AirPods case.
Select "Settings" on the iPad > "Bluetooth".
From the device list, tap next to your AirPods.
Tap "Eartips Fit Test", then "Continue" and follow the instructions that appear.
Connect the AirPods Max with an audio cable
Do one of the following to connect your AirPods Max to the iPad with a cable instead of wireless:
iPad models with headphone jack: Use an Apple Lightning to 3.5mm audio cable to connect the charging port on your AirPods Max to the headphone jack on the iPad.
Other models: Connect an Apple Lightning to 3.5mm audio cable to the charging port on your AirPods Max, connect an Apple Lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter to the charging port on your iPad and connect the two 3.5mm mm audio plug.
Note: If the audio connection doesn't work, you should make sure that the headphone jack adapter is plugged into the charging port on your iPad and not into your AirPods Max.
With AirPods Max, AirPods Pro and AirPods (2nd generation) you can also amplify soft sounds and adapt certain frequencies to your hearing. For more information, see Set headphone adjustments.
