Share a contact group or distribution list with other people

You can send a contact group (formerly known as a distribution list) to other people by including them in a message. The recipient can then save it in the Contacts folder.

Send a contact group or distribution list

  1. Open a new message. If you're using Outlook 2016 or 2013, instead of leaving the draft message open in the Reading Pane, use the pop-up button to open the message in a new window.

  2. Depending on your version of Outlook, do one of the following.

    • In Outlook 2016 or 2013, select on the navigation bar people out.

    • In Outlook 2010 or Outlook 2007, select Contacts out.

  3. Drag out the contact group contacts in the message body.

Note: You may need to customize the message and the Contacts window so that they appear at the same time.

  4. Submit the message.

Note: If you want to send a contact group to someone else and the contact group contains members from the global address list, make sure that the recipient of the contact group is also using the same global address list.

Save a contact group or distribution list

  • In the Reading Pane or the Message List, drag the distribution list attachment to the Navigation Pane and drop it on the Contacts buttons orpeople from.

  • Drag the distribution list attachment from the message into a opened contact view. This assumes that both the message and the Contacts folder are open at the same time.
